PoliticalMy political experience includes twelve years on the Board of education and four and a half years on city council giving a total of sixteen and one half years of elected public service to the citizens if Sarnia. My first (small p) political activities were with my technical and professional associations. See the Profession page. I first ran for office in 1980 for the Lambton County Board of Education (LCBE). I was runner-up by 50 votes! I was first elected to the LCBE in 1982. I served as chair of several committees, and was chosen as Vice-Chair of the board for 1984/85. I was not elected in 1985, but re-elected in 1988, 1991 and 1994. I did not run for the board (then to be called the Lambton-Kent District Board of Education) in 1997. I served a total of 12 years on the Board of Education. I was vice-chair again in 1989/90 and the Chairman of the Board for 1990-1991. I ran for the nomination for the Progressive Conservative Party for the 1995 provincial election. I was the Progressive Conservative Candidate for the Sarnia-Lambton Riding in the 1997 Federal Election. I was the runner-up for Councillor in Sarnia Ward 1 in the 1997 election. When the winner resigned in mid 1999, Sarnia City Council appointed me to the seat. I was re-elected to Sarnia City Council in 2000. Thanks for visiting! Dick Carpani |
